Handbags made from candy wrappers, recycled movie billboards and plastic bottles, sound couture to you? Well if the founders of ecoist have anything to say about it then it would. They have been making the "granola chic" fashionable since 2004, way before Al Gore wrote the Inconvenient Truth and made it fashionable to jump on the Green bandwagon (oops, that did sound a bit sarcastic didn't it?) Personal political views aside, I first found out about them when I was in South Beach for Winter Music Conference in 2005 , while browsing in a little boutique along Washington. I was pleasantly surprised by their sturdy construction, the fact that they are waterproof, considering after all, that they are made from candy wrappers! :-)
When I returned home I went to their website and was surprised with the variety. With different lines, designed for the busy "eco-diva" in mind, these bags are definitely not for your average tree hugger. Whether you are looking for a flashy & colorful bag, for a night out on the town, or a more sophisticated day time look with the Portfolio Bar Code bag, ecoist has what even the Bergdorf buyin' honey's are looking for! My favorite by far is their Botero bag (pictured above)because of its gorgeous goldish hue, gold chain strap and unique bulbous shape that is great for storage. i can rock it in NYC and definitely stand out from the crowd. Be sure to check out their latest "billboard" line which takes recycled movie billboards and turns them into laptop cases (Cloverfield pictured right), yoga bags, wallets and mod handbags. I'm hoping they will make The Bourne Ultimatum into a yoga bag!
So why not help the environment, and spread your fashion wings with this new evolution of couture - eco-haute. Did I mention they plant a tree for every handbag sold?
